Does Hunger Interrupt Sleeping Through the Night?
AS PARENTS BEGIN to wean children from the breast or the bottle, they often worry that the child may wake up hungry, particularly if she doesn’t eat a lot. If that worry then motivates the parent to feed her child during the night, she may well begin to undo whatever sleep training she’s managed to set in motion. As pediatrician Jane Guttenberg, M.D., of New York City states, “If children eat in the middle of the night, they will just develop that habit, become used to eating then, and continue to expect it. This is similar to when you are on vacation and your body gets used to having breakfast at 11 A.M. It quickly becomes a habit. But parents can break that habit, and children do not need to eat in the middle of the night.”
